frenchmans cap

Rising dramatically above the ancient forests of Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, Frenchmans Cap has become one of Tasmania’s most popular summit treks. It’s named for its distinctive quartzite peak, which reaches 1,443 metres and dominates the surrounding landscape.

Frenchmans Cap is reached via a challenging multi-day walk that extends for 54 kilometres (return) and takes between 3 and 5 days. The trail winds through buttongrass plains, temperate rainforest and alpine landscapes, with spectacular views unfolding as you climb towards the summit.

Huts and tent platforms can be found at Lake Vera (the first overnight stop) and Lake Tahune (the second), with a limited number of bunk beds, a rainwater tank and drop toilets available. No mattresses or cooking facilities are provided, so you need to bring your own. A valid Parks Pass is required and walker registration is mandatory.
